It was a symbol of power and might, written with gold and silver ink on purple parchment; the original cover was probably covered with pearls and jewels. Despite the impressive piece of art the Codex Argenteus indubitably is, its real value is the content: it’s the most complete text written in the now extinct Gothic language.
